Access and support for multilingual learners (MLs) are essential for their long-term language academic achievement. Regular practice with complex texts and academic language through reading, writing, and speaking is necessary for success. Previously, there has been a tendency to simplify texts and tasks for MLs, which reduces rigor, critical thinking, and engagement with complex language. However, MLs can effectively engage with academic texts, academic content, and academic language when provided with access, support and scaffolding. In this session, we will explore two strategies to enhance learning: text engineering, and structured writing frames.
